Quartet alarmed by Israel's settlement plans|updates

The Middle East Quartet, consisting of the US, Russia, the EU and the UN, has expressed concern over Israel's move to build 277 houses in the occupied West Bank and 900 houses in occupied East Jerusalem. "The Quartet is greatly concerned by Israel's recent announcements to advance planning for new housing units in Ariel and east Jerusalem," the the mediating group said in a statement on Tuesday. "This comes at a critical juncture with Quartet efforts ongoing to resume negotiations which are the only way to a just and durable solution to the  conflict," the statement said. The statement came amid intense efforts by Tony Blair, the Quartet's special envoy, to get Palestinians and Israelis back into direct talks. Israel approved on Monday the building of almost 300 new homes in Ariel, a settlement inside the occupied West Bank, taking the total to more than 2,700 new settler homes approved in the past two weeks. The planned expansion has brought a furiou...

Anti-government protesters continue to take to the streets across Syria, despite reports of deaths and arrests as the military cracks down on demonstrators. Rallies were staged in several locations after night prayers on Tuesday, including in Homs, Albu Kamal near the Iraqi border, Binnish in the north and in some Damascus suburbs. Meanwhile, the Local Co-ordination Committees (LCC), an activist network, reported that at least two people had been killed in the coastal city of Latakia, where the military kept up an assault for the fourth straight day. One of the victims was a 13-year-old boy shot dead by a sniper, they said. Rights group Avaaz said it had the names of nine people killed in the city, but the death toll was not confirmed by other activists, who said 36 people have been killed there since Saturday. Libya crisis, latest news

Fighting was reported in both Zawiya, just 50km (30 miles) west of Tripoli, and Gharyan, 80km to the south. If the towns fall to the rebels, they would have Tripoli surrounded by land, with Nato blocking sea access. In comments broadcast on Libyan TV, Col Muammar Gaddafi called on supporters "to get ready for the fight". A spokesman for his government said both Zawiya and Gharyan remained "under our full control". Col Gaddafi's short speech was his first public address since the rebels launched their offensive around Tripoli. "Move forward, challenge, pick up your weapons, go to the fight for liberating Libya inch by inch from the traitors and from Nato," he said, in a statement in poor-quality audio early on Monday, described as live by Libyan TV. There were unconfirmed reports, carried by the Reuters news agency, of a meeting between Col Gaddafi's representatives and rebels on the Tunisian island of Djerba. carlos zambrano,Cubs have done after 30 days

The Chicago Cubs have finally done something smart by putting Carlos Zambrano on the disqualified list.  The move means Zambrano will receive no pay and he wont take part in team activities for 30 days. As some of you know, I was up fairly late Friday night, but wanted to leave this be until morning, to see if I felt any different about it. But I don't, and the truth is that I don't really even know what to say about Carlos Zambrano any more. Carlos Alberto Zambrano (Big Z or El Toro) Position: Pitcher Bats: Both, Throws: Right Height: 6' 5", Weight: 270 lb. When he's had his past meltdowns, I've said his behavior was "indefensible" and the Cubs should trade him immediately (June 2007), that his antics were "childish" and he needed to "grow up" (May 2009) and that he "had to go" after an "epic meltdown" (June 2010). Carlos Alberto Zambrano (born June 1, 1981) is a Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher ...

Saudi Arabia recalls against Syria's deadly crackdown

Saudi Arabia has said it is recalling its ambassador from Damascus in protest against Syria's deadly crackdown on anti-government demonstrators. A statement from King Abdullah said the violence was "unacceptable" and called for it to stop before it was too late. It came hours after the Arab League issued its first official statement, strongly condemning the violence. On Sunday, more than 80 people died as the army launched assaults in eastern and central Syria, activists said. They said at least 50 died when soldiers, backed by scores of tanks and armoured vehicles, stormed Deir al-Zour during the dawn call to prayer. A man living in the city told the BBC the tanks had been withdrawn from the eastern city, but that residents feared they would come back. Twenty-six others were killed in Hula, near the city of Homs, including a 10-year-old boy. Deaths were also reported in Idlib in the north-west. At least 22 killed in US by heat wave

A great warmy heat wave in the central and southern United States has killed at least 22 people this week, and forecasters Wednesday said the heat was moving east and could last for weeks. The National Weather Service said 141 million people in more than two dozen states were under a heat advisory or warning because of the soaring temperatures. The country's midsection has been scorched off and on since late May. Some cities already have experienced temperatures in the 100s, and the combined heat and humidity could push the so-called “real feel” temperatures to 115 degrees through Saturday, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. In Chicago, the heat triggered unhealthy smog levels to the extent that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency urged people to reduce polluting activities such as idling vehicles and mowing lawns. Grid operators say they are prepared for the increased demand. According to the major operators in the Northeast and Midwest, power usage this week...

When Twitter Met Facebook -- Awkwardly

You would think that a meeting between the founders of the world’s most popular social networks would be a fun affair, with conversation revolving around funding, investments and who has the bigger userbase. In reality, it appears it is a much more dour experience, at least if Twitter co-founder Biz Stone is to be believed. In November 2008, Twitter co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams jumped into a car and ventured over to Facebook to meet Mark Zuckerberg, in a meeting which we recognise as the time when Facebook tried to buy Twitter. Talking in an interview with NPR’s Peter Sagal, Stone reveals the awkward meeting with Zuckerberg, thanks largely to the Facebook founder’s apparent lack of humour. When asked whether Twitter’s founders were members of “incredibly luxurious club “you and Zuckerberg and the guys from Google all get together and you sit in these, like, solid gold armchairs and you all just stare at your smartphones and never talk to each other,”  Stone admits it ...

Borders to go out of business

The Borders store on Lohr Road in Pittsfield Township was created as the chain's new "concept" store when it opened in 2008. A unit of Boston-based retail liquidator Gordon Brothers Group has been hired to dispose of bankrupt Borders Group’s real estate. DJM Realty said the bookseller retained the Melville, N.Y., company to line up bidders for 259 leases for Borders superstores that are available for assignment nationwide, including eight locations in Massachusetts. “With a lack of new real estate development and restrictive barriers of entry in several key markets, surplus real estate like Borders becomes a very good opportunity for a number of growing retailers looking to open for business during the next four to 12 months,” said Andy Graiser, co-president of DJM Realty, in a statement. According to DJM Realty, the leases up for grabs in Massachusetts would be in Boston’s Downtown Crossing, the Cambridgeside Galleria, Legacy Place in Dedham, ...

rachel uchitel and her new boyfriend

On Friday, we were happy for Tiger's ex. We read an item in Page Six that said Nordegren was dating Jamie Dingman, a billionaire's son who once shacked up with Bridget Moynahan after another wandering-eyed pro ran off. (We were a little upset that she wasn't, in fact, dating former NHL goon Chris Dingman, but we take what we can get.) But Dingman was money-appropriate, handsome, all of that.Rachel Uchitel has given Tiger Woods back most of the settlement money he paid her and is now preparing to sue Gloria Allred, the lawyer who struck the deal, allegedly because Allred sold her out for money, TMZ has learned. The couple put on a steamy show as they publicly embraced in the Miami Beach sea. We've learned the agreement stated ... if Rachel violated the confidentiality clause ... she would not only have to return the money she received but Tiger could sue her for damages as well. Sources tell TMZ ... several months ago Tiger's lawyer, Jay Lavely, contacted Gloria a...

Japan won its first Women's World Cup title Sunday in a triumph built on hope and renewal, lifting a stricken country and somehow finding a way to win a match that the United States dominated for long stretches but could not control. "This is obviously going to hurt for a while," said U.S. forward Abby Wambach, whose only hole in her glittering career is the World Cup title. The United States, the top-ranked team in the world, played its best game of the tournament but struggled to convert its many chances into a tangible advantage. The Americans did not ...

Abby Wambach U.S. women to World Cup title

FRANKFURT, Germany -- Abby Wambach's halftime instructions to her teammates were simple and insistent: Just put the ball on the back post. We'll get a goal. When the 79th minute arrived in a 1-1 tie with France in the Women's World Cup semifinals, Lauren Cheney prepared to serve a corner kick. The French had dominated possession. The United States hung on tenuously. Cheney spotted Wambach, whose eyes were imploring, saucer-like. "You can tell when Abby's seeing red," Cheney said. The kick floated to the far post as directed. Wambach charged forward and nodded the ball downward, her head punching like a fist, putting the Americans ahead in an eventual 3-1 victory Wednesday and giving them passage to the World Cup final here today against Japan. At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, with impeccable technique, anticipation and fearless determination, Wambach is considered the best header in women's soccer. Forty-nine of her 121 career international goals — 40 percen...
