Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. it expects fewer travelers to take a trip this Fourth of July, as high gas prices pinch lower-income households. The travel club said it expects 39 million Americans to travel 50 miles or more away from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend, which stretches from June 30 to July 4. The Hester Street Fair, located at the corner of Hester and Essex Streets in the Lower East Side, throws an Independence Day Cookout on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with more than 40 vendors, many selling food.
