World Health Day – 7 April 2011

On World Health Day 2011, WHO will introduce a six-point policy package to combat the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial resistance is not a new problem but one that is becoming more dangerous; urgent and consolidated efforts are needed to avoid regressing to the pre-antibiotic era. World Health Day 2010 focused on urbanization and health. With the campaign "1000 cities - 1000 lives", events were organized worldwide calling on cities to open up streets for health activities. Stories of urban health champions were gathered to illustrate what people are doing to improve health in their cities. ‘Antimicrobial agents are considered "miracle drugs" that are our leading weapons in the treatment of infectious diseases. Antimicrobial resistance is the ability of certain microorganisms to withstand attack by antimicrobials, and the uncontrolled rise in resistant pathogens threatens lives and wastes limited healthcare resources.'
