Syria protests continue and crackdown latest news

Anti-government protesters continue to take to the streets across Syria, despite reports of deaths and arrests as the military cracks down on demonstrators. Rallies were staged in several locations after night prayers on Tuesday, including in Homs, Albu Kamal near the Iraqi border, Binnish in the north and in some Damascus suburbs. Meanwhile, the Local Co-ordination Committees (LCC), an activist network, reported that at least two people had been killed in the coastal city of Latakia, where the military kept up an assault for the fourth straight day. One of the victims was a 13-year-old boy shot dead by a sniper, they said. Rights group Avaaz said it had the names of nine people killed in the city, but the death toll was not confirmed by other activists, who said 36 people have been killed there since Saturday. The Rally is always a time of good news and for the first time, I actually felt that there was a piece of good news that affected me directly – the rise in income ceiling for purchasing a flat. That was definitely worth celebrating. Other moves like the modified age ceiling for PCPS were definitely worth celebrating, but not something I feel strongly about yet. But of course I shouldn’t be harsh really. Afterall, the government had been making many decisions for us until now. It’s natural to breed such dependent mindset. But that has to change. We are no more the uneducated cohort as the past generations and it’s time we learn to stand up for ourselves. The UN officially declared famine in two southern Somalia regions Wednesday as the world slowly mobilised to save 12 million people battling hunger in the region's worst drought in 60 years. The United States urged Al Qaeda-inspired Shebab rebels controlling the area to allow the return of relief groups they expelled two years ago, , Valerie Amos, urged the world to make the link between climate change and the drought. Somalia is the most dangerous country in the world to work in, according to the U.N.'s World Food Program, which lost 14 relief workers in the past few years.
