Embattled U.S. Rep. David Wu will resign from the House of Representatives after being accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward a fundraiser's daughter, he announced Tuesday.said Sunday that the seven-term congressman intends to finish his term next year but won't run again. For one thing, that means Brad Avakian, the state labor commissioner who announced his candidacy in May, can no longer tell other Democrats to stay out of the race or risk giving the advantage to Wu.The wellbeing of my children must come before anything else," Wu said in a statement. "With great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis. This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House, and my colleagues.Democratic leaders had called for a House Ethics investigation after the initial reports of the allegation. Wu had said that whatever occurred was consensual.
Wu said Tuesday the well-being of his children should come first,will stick around to take what will be, for everyone else, a tough vote. Wu probably dug his own grave when he started disclosing his mental health history but didn't disclose the rest of his mistakes. Two Democrats were already running to replace him; they start a special election in this district, in Portland's liberal-leaning suburbs, with an advantage.
