At least 11 people were killed and 89 hurt Saturday when a Chinese bullet train lost power after being struck by lightning and was hit from behind by another train, knocking two of its carriages off a bridge, state media reported,high-speed rail train D301 from Beijing headed for Fuzhou followed another train D3115 from Hangzhou to Fuzhou . At 20:34 or so, the train D3115 was hit by thunder, and subsequently lost power and stopped. But D301 did not, so it crashed into D3115, and two cars of D3115 as well as four cars from D301 derailed and have apparently fallen of the bridge.
It said one carriage from the first train fell about 20 to 30 metres. Pictures on the Internet showed one badly damaged car lying on its side by the bridge and the second car leaning against the bridge after landing on its end.
Chinese firefighters work to rescue survivors after a Chinese high-speed train derailed and two of its carriages fell off a bridge after a lightning strike knocked out power on the line on July 23, 2011 while the train was travelling between the cities of Hangzhou and Wenzhou, in eastern China's Zhejiang province.
